Kubel vs. Para

The Arizona Diamondbacks attempted to solidify their offensive attack in 2012 with the addition of LF Jason Kubel. With Justin Upton entrenched in RF and Chris Young possessing a nice speed/power combo in CF, that means Gerardo Parra is regulated to 4th outfielder duties.


Kubel is a left-handed batter that will be turning 30 years old in May and is coming off a year in which he hit .273/.766. The year before only .249/.750. He had one monster season with the Twins in 2009 batting .300/.905 with 28 HR and 103 RBI, but other than that hasn't be an offensive stud during his 7 MLB seasons. The Snakes signed him for 2 yr/$15M. His defense leaves much to be desired (-41.8 UZR over past 2.5 seasons). He's a nice role player that when healthy can provide some pop and run production, but did Arizona need him?

Parra is coming off a Gold Glove effort in 2011, and the 24 year old improved at the plate batting .292/.784. He does not possess the power that Kubel does, but his defense and speed are much better. He's not even arbitration eligible, so he's much cheaper than Kubel as well (he'll likely make around $500K in 2012). He's always hit for average in the minors (.314) too.

The Breakdown:
Kubel- power, run production, costly.

Parra- cheap, defense, speed, batting average.

Why did the Diamondbacks sign Kubel again?

WTF?! No, seriously, what the f...?!

Mike Diaz is the crazy shirtless Rambo in the picture above. The Pittsburgh Pirates Mike Diaz of the 80's. Thing I don't understand, he was never a star, not even close. Why did he get such a lame cool promo pic? 4 seasons and only 293 games between the Cubs, Buccos, and White Sox. He played primarily outfield, but a little 1st base, and even caught some too. Slyvester Stallone thinks he's whack.

The annual MLB Winter Meetings begin tonight in Dallas, Texas. Here are my predictions...

Jimmy Rollins and the Phillies come to a 4 yr/$44M pact with a 5th year vesting option.

Matt Garza of the Cubs and Matt Thornton of the White Sox are dealt to the Yankees.

The Twins retain Matt Capps and Michael Cuddyer.

There is a reunion in Colorado with Jeff Francis and the Rockies.

The Rockies and Braves do some sort of Martin Prado for Seth Smith and prospects swap.

Jose Reyes and the Miami Marlins agree on a contract for 6 yr/$102M.

Blue Jays find their closer by inking Francisco Cordero for 2 yr/$15M.

The Pirates sign Derek Lee 1 yr/$6M with option for 2013.

Now lets see how much, if any of this, comes true...
