Mets smartly pass on Webb

As I've discussed the Mets need a starter or two with Johan down but having a meltdown every time a starter signs somewhere is pointless. When you have a former Cy Young Award winner like Brandon Webb signs somewhere fans are all why didn't you take a chance on him? Good risk guys! Well he'd be a fine risk if he had pitched more than four innings the past two years and had been throwing his fastball over 83 mph in the instructional league. Keith Law a man much smarter than me has mocked the signing. You can also toss in the fact that Webb doctor last year gave him a clean bill of health and he didn't throw a pitch at the major league level last year and the same doctor gave him a clean bill of health going into 2011. If you look it up pitchers rarely if ever regain their previous fastball velocity especially in their 30's. These facts won't stop some Mets fan from wailing or calling the Mets cheap in this situation. Lets not forget last year when Mets fans wailed that the Mets didn't give Sheets ten mil and were being cheap. They clearly showed no interest in Webb because they didn't feel he could either stay healthy or be effective on the oft chance he'd be able to stay on the field. Webb got three mil guaranteed and with incentives over 3 mil. I dunno after two years of not taking the mound and the lack of velocity this doesn't seem like a wise move. The Rangers lost Lee and were in need for another starter and Webb walked into a good situation. I don't see a happy ending there and I'm glad the Mets didn't take the chance. Jeff Francis doesn't have nearly the upside of Webb but I think he's much more likely to toe the rubber and be a league average starter for a better price.

the maddoff thing is an issue, imo. I don't trust the Wilpons to allow Alderson 2 dumb castillo n perez.

Yes payroll has gone down the past few years. I do think it has something to do with the whole Maddoff ponzi scheme. That said, the payroll is still around 130 mil. You can win with that. The problem is the way the money has been spent over the years

SHEETs was never as good as webb n had been hurt every year

Sheets is a tiny bit more durable then you'd think. He has three season where he threw 200 innings and another one where he had 198 innings before getting hurt in September of '08. He has never been quite as good as Webb and yes he had more durability issues. That is until the past two years. That said Sheets is gonna miss 2011 after missing '09. We can agree that giving Sheets ten mil is much more of a risk and foolhardy than giving Webb three mil guaranteed.

I'll be very surprised if Brandon Webb is ever an effective starter again over a full season. I see him doing multiple DL stints and pitching poorly.
