A Look Back...In Anger

The year was 1994. In politics, Clinton was President, Republicans won Congress, and George W. Bush was still a partial owner of the Texas Rangers (until his election as governor in November).

In the entertainment world, Boyz II Men were still boyz, Brian Adams, Sting, and Rod Stewart were making beautiful music together with the uber-raspy "All For Love." Tim Allen and Jerry Seinfeld dominated the silver screen, and Forrest Gump was chillin’ with the Lion King and Keanu Reeves as leaders in the box office.
In sports, Texas enjoyed victories in the Super Bowl and in the NBA (Cowboys and Rockets), and the Rangers won the Stanley Cup.

But what about baseball? That year, in August, the 232 day strike began; the first year without a World Series since 1904. Hopefully history won’t repeat itself as recent rumors of salary caps have again started, due in part to the wild spending by the Yankees for recent additions like C.C. Sabathia and A. J. Burnett. In a year with the economy already in the toilet, and businesses failing, the last thing we need is for our National Pastime to go by the wayside. I think it will take longer for fans to return to baseball (it took almost two years last time, and that was when the economy was GOOD!), as most of us will not feel any sympathy for multi-millionaires (players and owners alike) begging for more money.

Looking back, my feelings of this event have not changed...
Here's to a fabulous 2009!!
