Black & Hyper

Did you know the percentage of MLB players that were on medicine for ADHD in 2008 was the same as the percentage of MLB players that were black. That's dumbfounding, astonishing, and nearly unbelievable. 8 out of every 100 players in Major League Baseball is black, and 8 out of 100 players are on meds for their diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder...holy mother of Mountain Dew and the NAACP.

Only 8% blacks in the game is about as low as it has been since the day Jackie Robinson put on the Dodgers jersey. It baffles me that the number has dwindled so low. Baseball has always been a white dominated sport, but blacks really started representing until this decent downturn. This is due to many factors: increase in foreign players (Japanese, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rican, Mexican, etc.), lack of playing fields and equipment in the inner city, and spike in interest of other sports (basketball, football, soccer). I think it's sad that baseball is losing some of its diversity that makes it such a beautiful game. Hopefully MLB's concentrated effort to bring baseball back to the urban areas by funding programs for the youth there will help with a turnaround.

The fact that 8% of players use a substance for their ADHD seems ridiculously high. Most of these prescriptions are on the banned substance list of the World Anti-Doping Agency and otherwise would earn a suspension and fine, but these players get special medical clearance via "therapeutic use exemption". Hell, weed can be therapeutic...any chance they can get clearance for that? The major gripe about this is that these players are given an unfair advantage by taking this chemical concoction, and should have their diagnosis be "awarded" by multiple doctors and be closely monitored. Yet, poor JC Romero takes an over-the-counter substance from GNC that was said to be "safe" by the Players Association and is facing a 50 game suspension and $1.25M fine...where's the justice (and I don't mean David)?

Hopefully over the next decade we'll see a return in the double-digits for percentage of black players and a drop to 1 or 2% for the ADHD drug-heads.

This whole ADHD thing is a crock of shit. Adam LaRoche is certifiably ADHD, has been for a long time, so he should be given medical clearance. But some of these other guys coming out the closet, so to speak, aren't really suffering from ADHD, they just want the helpful side effects of the drugs.

A circus side show. A ready made excuse for not being sent to the minor leagues. Good article, though.
